Seize the Moment (or the value of being attentive to inspiration)

While working on this drawing, I learned (or re-learned) the importance of acting on inspiration the moment it is received.  I can't remember what I was looking at which sparked this image, but I decided to grab my sketchbook right away and start drawing.  It turned out to be a smart thing to do. Since the idea was fresh in my mind and I was excited to put it down on paper, the experience turned out to be a lot of fun.

Inspiration can be a fickle thing, and is not something I can summon at will.  Most of the time, whether at work or at home, any creative endeavor on my part really boils down to a lot of research, brainstorming, and drawing things over and over until they look right.  Sometimes I'm really happy with how things turn out and sometimes I'm not.  It's like digging through loads of dirt.  Most of the time it's just a lot of work.  But sometimes there are a few gems which surface in the process.

That said, I'm resolved to not push off inspiration when it comes.  My sketchbooks will be a place I can turn to instantly to jot down any ideas, or (preferably) do an all out drawing if I can.

Inspiration, I've decided, is like a gift someone else occasionally gives me.  It's awesome when it comes, but if I keep turning down or ignoring it, the frequency I'll receive it will probably diminish.

Conversely, I hope the more open, attentive, and appreciative I am of this gift when it comes, I will experience these magical moments of inspiration more frequent.
